Biomedical Informatics Degree Milestones

This is the summary page which describes the tasks or accomplishments (milestones) that you'll need to check off to demonstrate progress towards your goal. Only the most general milestones are listed on this webpage. See the specific sub-pages (left-hand navigation bar) for each degree.

Paperwork

Of course, you'll need to document your progress and we have paperwork and forms for you to fill out every step of the way. You'll need to meet with your academic and research advisor (as soon as you find one) twice a year to discuss your progress towards the degree. Together, you'll review your activities and complete the Progress Report. HCP students will only submit a progress report once a year and they will need to hold this discussion with their industrial site supervisor and their academic advisor. Coterminal and HCP students do not have required research projects but have the option to participate.

The Registrar's website. Go ahead and bookmark this website. You will need it every step of the way.

The Table below shows the quarterly milestones for all students. Click on the Milestones page for each of the degree programs on your left for specific items for you.

The First Quarter - All Students

Register for courses by submitting your Study List (list of courses) using Axess by the deadline. Failure to submit your study list on time could jeopardize your funding including stipends, tuition, health insurance, status in the program...

HCP Masters candidates will need to register for a minimum of 3 units per quarter. If there isn't a course available, fill out a Leave of Absence form (obtain from the Registrar's website under "Forms", right hand navigation bar) and submit to the Student Services Officer. HCP students can find more details about how to manage courses under "BMI HCP students"

Coterminal MS students usually need to sign up for 15 units. Coterminal MS students will need to be cautious about choosing "graduate career" or "undergraduate career" for their courses when using Axess. See "BMI Coterms" for more details about how to manage undergrad vs. grad courses.

All other graduate students must sign up for 10 units exactly (10 units is considered 50% time). If you need extra units to reach 10 units, you will need to sign up for Biomedin 299 Directed Reading and Research. For cross-listed courses, choose the "Biomedin" course code.

Course Waivers

During November of your first academic year, you will be asked to submit all your requests for course waivers. If you have taken class which overlap significantly or entirely with required courses in the BMI degree requirements, you can request the BMI executive committee to grant a waiver from the requirement. It is extremely helpful to obtain a course description or syllabus of your previous class and compare it with the Stanford course description or syllabus and to review the descriptions with your academic advisor to help determine equivalency before submitting your request.

Coterminal students will need to think about requesting course waivers immediately after acceptance into the program. They cannot wait until November.

Progress Reports

All students are required to submit progress reports . HCP students submit once per year (due in August). All other students submit two reports per year (due December and June). You will need to meet with your advisor(s) about one month before the reports are due. For many faculty, you will need to make appointments well in advance.

Masters Program Proposal

All Masters students must submit the Program Proposal for a Masters Degree (download form from the Registrar's website) by the end of the first quarter to the Student Services Officer. This form is required for graduation. See the instructions on the form to enter corrections to your Masters program. Submit the BMI Course Flowsheet (located in the BMI Progress Report files) when you submit the Program Proposal.

And each Quarter thereafter

Study list, add and drop deadlines retain their significance. HCP students who fail to file a study list or submit a leave of absence will be automatically dropped from the degree program. Reinstatement is possible but not guaranteed.
