Student Space and Equipment

First year BMI students are assigned carrels in the Medical School Office Building (MSOB), on the second floor in the student commons area. There are significant resources for group use, including BMI program administrative support, IT support, compute resources, office equipment and supplies. Some areas are reserved for group work including the North and South pod (aka, conference carrels), conference rooms and the lounge area. There is pantry and kitchen space with microwaves, refrigerator and coffee machine. You are expected to maintain your carrel and all communal space by cleaning up after yourself, removing expired items from the fridge and performing due maintence for the common equipment, i.e., add water to the coffee machine, add paper to the copier. Ask the student services officer or the receptionist for the codes to unlock the copier, and the various locations for supplies to refill the machines.

For your security, you may request a locker in MSOB to protect your valuables. There have been reports of petty theft in the building. The Student Services Officer or the receptionist will give you instructions to obtain the keys to the building. Please keep the doors locked after office hours.

After the first year, carrel space is assigned to students with faculty advisors in MSOB. Other students will usually move to spaces with their research advisor. Any unused carrel space is assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact the Student Services Officer if you need carrel space past the first year.

The program provides first year students with a laptop to facilitate mobility and to eliminate the need to customize desktop machines for each student's research interests as they progress through the required research rotations. Students (or their research advisors) have the option of purchasing the laptops or returning the machines to the program at the end of the academic year (Sept. 1).

The University has site licenses for essential software and VPN. Contact IT support if you need to purchase software for University business. The bookstore offers software for personal use with an academic discount. Some software vendors, i.e., Apple, offer equipment and software for either personal or University purchase through a dedicated website.

The laptops and other common equipment, such as the copy machine, and supplies are University property and we ask students to follow University guidelines for legal and responsible usage. Failure to follow University guidelines for proper usage is an infraction of the Honor Code. Do not install unlicensed software, download movies, music or otherwise infringe on copyright protected material. Limit copying to academic and scholarly use. The libraries (the closest is Lane Library) offer copy machines for personal use. Kinkos offers an academic discount.

Mail

All students have a mailbox in MSOB. Please check this box regularly. We also have internal mailing lists and you will be added automatically. We regret, due to the complexity of the program, the plethora of internal mailing lists which leads to duplicate emails appearing in your Inbox.

Shortly after acceptance, you will be able to create your Stanford University Network ID (SUNet ID). Immediately after creation of the SUNet ID, you can create your Stanford email address. Please do so and then forward this information to the Student Services Officer. Complete all requested contact information including your on-campus daytime address and contact information. Both the program and the University will need this information to communicate with you for regular or emergency events.
