PhD Program

funding

Funding is available to provide research support for full-time students in the Biomedical Informatics program. Applicants to the Ph.D. program are automatically considered for National Library of Medicine (NLM) funding (see below) and other fellowship support. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent residents to be eligible for NLM funding. International students are automatically considered for Stanford fellowships (see below). Candidates do not need to hold master’s degrees to be considered for the Ph.D. program and the fellowships. A four year bachelor’s degree is required, however.

SOURCES OF FUNDING

The NLM Training Grant
Generally, the Stanford BMI program supports full-time enrolled Ph.D. and Academic M.S. students through a training grant award from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health.the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. Our NLM funding provides stipend support for six concurrent post-doctoral trainees, and for 10 pre-doctoral students (Academic M.S. or Ph.D. programs). Students who are funded by the NLM training grant receive half-time tuition of 10 units per quarter (leaving the other half time for research), health insurance coverage, and a stipend. The precise amount of the stipend is tied to your years of relevant experience and education. Stipend amounts range from $31,092 to $48,852 annually for postdocs and $27,600 to $48,852 for predocs. Students entering the program as predocs may also be medical students, although their stipends and tuition costs are paid only while they are working on the BMI degree. The NLM training grant requires all Academic M.S. and Ph.D. students to complete a research project. Students on the NLM training grant must be US citizens or permanent residents.

The NIGMS Training Grant
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is a training grant offered through the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. By supporting basic biomedical research and training nationwide, NIGMS lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The NIGMS training grant provides funding support for six pre-doctoral students in various programs and departments. Students who are funded by the NIGMS training grant receive half-time tuition of 10 units per quarter (leaving the other half time for research), health insurance coverage, and a stipend. The precise amount of the stipend is tied to your years of relevant experience and education.

The Stanford Graduate Fellowship
The Stanford Graduate Fellowships Program (SGF) in Science and Engineering annually awards approximately 100 three-year fellowships providing tuition support and stipends to outstanding students pursuing doctoral degrees in the sciences and engineering. This fellowship is supported by an endowment of more than $200 million given by alumni, friends, faculty, corporations, and foundations who share Stanford's commitment to excellence in graduate education in the sciences and engineering.

EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

There are many scholarship opportunities available through non-profit and for profit organizations. Applicants are encouraged to explore the various opportunities and submit applications. If we are aware of specific scholarship opportunities, the information will be posted here.

FUNDING FOR CANDIDATES WHO ARE NOT US CITIZENS OR PERMANENT US RESIDENTS

Limited funding is available to support degree candidates who are not US citizens or permanent US residents. Candidates are usually not admitted to the Academic M.S. and Ph.D. programs unless funding can be established. One to two funding slots per year may be available from a competitive SGF award to support international Ph.D. degree candidates. Accepted international doctoral candidates may also pre-arrange Research Assistantships with a faculty member prior to matriculation. Masters degree candidates are not eligible for the SGF award, and it is difficult to support international students who are interested in the academic M.S. program. International students applying to the online professional M.S. program must obtain funding support through their employer or from personal resources.

Please contact the Student Services Officer for more information about funding scenarios.
